Donald grew up in Whiting, Indiana working at his parents grocery store, where he met his future wife Elouise. They married after he joined the Navy. Donald fought in the battle for Midway Islands which was considered a turning point in the war. Proudly he served in WW II, US Navy for 3 years, 7 months, and 15 days. Everyone that knew Don, knows how remarkable his memory was for facts and details!
Don worked at Standard Oil as an electrician, and refrigeration repair man before he & Elouise started their business on Kennedy Avenue, Calumet Rentalls.
Don was a founding member of the Highland Model A Restorers Club in 1964, keeping up that membership and involvement to date. He bought his first Model A, a 1932, in 1960, to be followed by a 1929 and a 1930, now driven by his son Arthur. The Model A adventures, road rallies, swaps & drive outs were a special part of his family and life. Don was also a great photographer, loved early morning Lighthouse shots especially. He enjoyed gardening, hiking, cars, cars, cars, active in his church, antiquing, a good laugh, and pie ala mode. More than anything, he valued people, honesty, and had a great work ethic. He was a giving friend, husband, father, grandfather...A true gentleman, a class act, a great role model, a man of Honor.
