Joanne "Joni" Zahrndt

Joanne "Joni" Zahrndt (nee Gruszka), 80, of Highland, IN, passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018.  She is survived by: loving husband of 58 years Edward, daughter Ruth (Steve) Schau, son Edward J. (Jane) Zahrndt, five grandchildren: Paulina, Anna, Andrew Schau, Stephanie and Jeremy Zahrndt, dearest sister-in-law and best friend Dory Gruszka, and numerous additional loving nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by: her parents Simon and Paulina Gruszka, sisters Rose Hasara, Frances Novak, Phyllis Rovai, and brother Jerome Gruszka.

A Celebration of Life Gathering will be Friday, April 27, 2018 at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8941 Kleinman Rd. (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN, 46322 from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be 9:30 am, Saturday, April 28, 2018, at Our Lady Of Grace Church, 3025 Highway Ave., Highland, IN, with Rev. Edward Moszur officiating. 

Joanne was born on May 26, 1937 in East Chicago, IN.  She attended elementary school at St. Stanislaus, and High School at Bishop Noll "Class of 55", and college at Ball State University, earning a degree in Education.  She taught Home Economics at Fort Wayne North Side, and in the East Chicago School City.  She was affiliated with Pi Beta Phi Social Sorority, and a member of the Golden Arrow.  She was active in the Highland community: Room Mother at Southridge Elementary, member of the PTA, a 20 year member of the Highland Council of Community Events, and Co Chairwoman of Highland's Diamond Jubilee.  She was dedicated to her children's many pursuits through out the years.  She also loved her grandchildren dearly, and attended as many of their activities as was possible.
