John A. Holmes, 85, of Griffith, passed away Saturday, January 20, 2018.  He is survived by:  loving wife of 60 years Janice E. Holmes, sisters-in-law Bonnie Holiday, and Michelle (Steve) Earnhart, sister Carlotta (Ben) Wagner, and brother-in-law Jim Maroney.  John was preceeded in death by: parents Hiram and Hazel Holmes, two brothers Frank and Henry Holmes, two sisters Ella Van Schenck, Elaine Maroney, and half sister Geraldine Hitchcock.

Visitation will be Wednesday, January 24, 2018  at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8941 Kleinman Rd (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN, 46322 from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, with a service following at 12:00 pm, with Pastor Tim Powers officiating. Burial to follow at a later date at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, Elwood, IL. 

John was a member of Griffith United Methodist Church, retired from American Can Company after 35 years of service, a veteran of the US Navy, and member of American Legion Post 66 of Griffith.  Memorials may be given Riley Children Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana. 

John was an avid bicyclist: bicycling the trails in Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri.  In his retirement years, John rode "Bike the (Outer) Drive" four times.
