James Merton Hines

James Merton Hines, of Dyer, Indiana, passed away Friday evening, June 8, 2018. He was born April 9, 1931 to Merton and Mary Hines. James is survived by: loving children Mark (Tina) Hines of St. John, Cynthia Hines of Highland, and Michael (Beth) Hines of Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, brother Robert (Shirley) Hines, sister Barbara Lail, grandchildren Michael, Abigail, Cole, and Ella, and many beloved nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife JoAnne (Portz) Hines.

Visitation will be Monday, June 11, 2018 at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8941 Kleinman Rd (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, Indiana, 46322 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm with a Funeral Service to follow immediately after the Visitation at the funeral home. 

James was a 1949 graduate of Hammond High School. He had retired from Inland Steel in 1993. James was an avid bird watcher and a master gardener specializing in roses. He loved dancing, playing cards, and telling stories. He was a wonderful swimmer and diver. James loved high school and college basketball and coached all three children in numerous sports. Dad never missed a game we played in.

James was an usher st St. Joseph's in Dyer for over 40 years. He was a Dyer Lion for years and sat on Dyer's BZA board as well in the 70's.

He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
