James Raymond Girman, age 84, of St. John passed from this life into the arms of Jesus on June 16, 2018. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Eleanor (nee Matyi), devoted daughters Suzanne (Bill) Farrell, Marisa L. Girman, and Donna (Bill) Winterhaler, beloved grandchildren Erica Winterhaler, Meghan Farrell Garcia, Brant Winterhaler, Justin Farrell and Rachel Farrell Waldron, and sisters-in-law Diane Girman and Mary Ann (Tom) Swan.
Jim was born on October 25, 1933 in Whiting, IN to Stephen and Frances (Sutton) Girman. He graduated from George Rodgers Clark High School in 1951 after playing football, singing in the choir, leading his class and being active in many other extracurricular activities. Upon graduating, he then completed a carpenter apprenticeship from where he continued to build a career as a highly reputable home builder throughout Northwest Indiana, eventually establishing Girman Builders.
Jim spent his free time fishing and tying flies, woodcarving, attending the Civil War Roundtable in Chicago, serving in various church ministries and spending quality time with his daughters in their interests and to help them through life. He was a loving, ever present father.
Jim was preceded in death with the recent passing of his younger brother and right hand man in Girman Builders, Jack Girman. Preceded by his other sibilings Robert, Eugene, Lawrence, Catherine, and Patricia, and parents Stephen and Frances.
Visitation to celebrate Jim’s life will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hillside Funeral Home, 8941 Kleinman Rd. (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, Indiana. Services will immediately follow with Pastor Don Rector officiating. Burial following at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Crown Point, Indiana. Memorials may be given to Calvary Baptist Church, Highland, Indiana, Suburban Bible Church Senior Sunday School, Highland, Indiana or memorial bench at Whiting beach.
