Joseph M. O'Brien

Joseph M. O’Brien, 68, of Griffith, Indiana, passed away on Friday, February 1, 2019, after a courageous battle with cancer.  He is survived by his loving wife, Donna (nee Thomas), of 48 years; four children, Jeffry (Nicole) O’Brien, Cory (Gina) O’Brien, Adam (Katie) O’Brien, and Kaitlyn (Ryan) Frost; six adoring grandchildren, Nela, Joseph, Declan, Campbell, Rowan, and Ava; one brother, Michael (Marcy) O’Brien; two sisters, Marcia Viront, and Mary Kay (late Mike) Zimmerman; one brother-in-law, Raymond Galocy; his beloved dog and companion, Lucy, and numerous additional loving family and friends.  Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Maxine O’Brien, and two sisters, Peggy O’Brien and Karen Galocy.

Friends will be invited to visit with the family on Friday, February 8, 2019 from 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, with a Prayer Service at 4:00 PM, at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road, Highland, Indiana, 46322.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Church, 525 N. Broad St., Griffith, Indiana, 46319.  Father Theodore Mens, officiating.

Joseph was a Past Grand Knight, with honorary lifetime membership, after over 40 years of committed service to The Knights of Columbus, Council 3631. He was a member of The American Legion, Post 66 in Griffith and was a longtime member of St. Mary Church.  He retired after 40 years of service from LaSalle Steel Company in Hammond, Indiana.  Joseph served as Vice President of the Progressive Steelworkers Union, and was a veteran of the United States Air Force Security Service.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memoriam of Joe can be made to the Franciscan Health Foundation; specifically dedicated to the Nursing Excellence Scholarship Fund for young people aspiring to become a nurse.
