Richard Robert Machnic, age 80, passed away on June 6, 2018 at his home due to health complications. He was born in East Chicago, IN on January 21, 1938 to Michael and Mary (Kerekes) Machnic, graduated from East Chicago Washington High School in 1956 and served in the U.S. Army from 1961 - 1963. Rich made his career as a boilermaker at Inland Steel (Local 1010) retiring after 35 years of service at the age of 52. He was a member of the Highland Elks 981 and the American Legion Post 180. He also enjoyed many years of golfing and fishing with his friends and yearly trips to his Aunt and Uncle's cottage in Crystal Beach, Canada with his family. He also enjoyed working on projects and Sudoku puzzles. He had an analytical mind and was extremely handy.
On April 22, 1961, he married Penny Gordon who survives along with: daughter Jill (James) Ferguson, son Mark (Carol) Machnic, four grandchildren that were the light of his life: Liam Ferguson, Michael Machnic, Olivia Ferguson and Abby Machnic, sister Mary (Richard) Gaskey, brother-in-law Kenneth (Carolyn) Gordon, niece Diane (Nick) Bizoukas, nephew Robert Gaskey, niece Erica (David) Huerta, nephew Todd (Vicki) Gordon and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by: parents Michael and Mary Machnic, brother-in- law John Gordon and nephew Michael Gaskey.
The family would like to thank all of the doctors, caregivers, friends and family for all of the support and care given to Rich over the last several weeks. There will be no visitation or services per his wishes.
