Vernon Sumner

Vernon Sumner, 75, resident of Calumet Township IN, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on Tuesday, October 16, 2018.  He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Marion, beloved children Tammy (Bryan) Gifford, Kim (Jason) Osteen, Tracy (Steven) Woods, dear grandchildren Brenden (Emily) Riley, Zach (Brittany)  and Kendall Gifford, Paul (David) Hobbs, Skylar and Kylie Hobbs, Steven and Michael Woods, three great grandchildren, Isabella Vasquez, Skye Rattray, Cora Gifford and grandbaby #4 on the way, siblings Clifford Sumner, Cooley (Kathleen) Sumner, Gladys (Tony) Costello and Sue Sumner. Numerous additional loving family members. Preceded in death by parents Will & Ruby Sumner, sisters Lucille, Linda, Betty and Aileen and brothers Winfred, Bobby Dean, Charles and Will Jr. Beloved nephew Ronald Dean Sumner and special childhood friend Dewey Lee Sumner.

Visitation will be Saturday October 20, 2018 from 9:00 - 11:00 am at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center 8941 Kleinman Rd, Highland, IN 46322  with a funeral service begining at 11:00 am.  

Vernon was an avid Kentucky Wildcat Basketball and Cincinnatti Reds fan. He was employed by Arcelor Mittal (Inland Steel) for 35 years.  A few of his favorite TV shows were The 3 Stooges, Mr. Ed and The Andy Griffith Show. He was a true jokester and would break out into song and dance at any time. Vernon would make up nicknames for everyone he met. He was always kind and considerate and was a very humble man that will be missed by everyone that was fortunate enough to come into his life.
