Walter Louis Drake, 71, of Lansing, Illinois, passed away surrounded by his family on Saturday, April 20, 2019, He was a devoted husband of 50 years to his wife Jeannette (Gorka), also survived by his seven children: Catherine (Jim) Turcotte, Kenneth (Martha) Drake, Christopher Drake, Karen (Jim) Johnson, Cynthia (Jason) Wallace, Kimberly (Scott) Majors, and Christina (Brenon Payne) Drake, grandfather of 14 grandchildren, brother of Sarah Sue Drake and Paul Martin Drake, nephew of Sarah Francis Drake and James (Kathy) Drake, brother-in-law of Leo Wojtaszek, Pat Culver Drake, Rebecca Nally Drake, Darlene Dunn Drake, and uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. Walter was preceded in death by his parents Charles Harold and Rose Irretta, Brothers, Charles Thomas, Arthur Benjamin, and William Joseph, Sister, Lisa Kay, and sister-in-law: Paulette Wojastek.
Friends are invited to visit with the family from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road, Highland, Indiana 46322. A Funeral Service will be held at 6:30 PM at the funeral home, immediately following.
Walter was born in Taylorsville, Kentucky to a proud sharecropper family. After high school, Walter joined the Navy for 4 years and took special pride in the time he spent on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Saratoga. While enlisted, he met and married his wife Jeannette and started and raised a family in the Chicagoland Area. Walter spent his career as a computer service technician with numerous companies until his retirement in 2013. He was an avid reader and collector of sci-fi and western novels and a tinkerer of all mechanical and electrical objects. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Homewood, Illinois for several decades, and was always up for a long road trip to visit his family scattered throughout the country.
