Barbara Jean Zandstra

Barbara Jean Zandstra’s faith in Jesus Christ became sight in the morning hours of April 3, 2025. Born February 12, 1934 in Hammond, Indiana, Barb was a small person with a big personality. Most who knew her have stories. She exhibited a grit learned from her mother that never shied away from work. No wallflower, she believed that an unexpressed opinion was not worth holding. She served the churches where she was a member and the schools her children attended. She was a good friend to her neighbors.

Barb was preceded in death by her husband of fifty-five years, John Paul Zandstra and her parents, Marion Teegarden and Eugene Merle Alters.

She is survived by her brother Jack (Pat) Alters and her children Dan (Deb) Zandstra, Patricia (Steve) Myers, John (Julie) Zandstra and Jerry (Mary) Zandstra. Barb had thirteen grandchildren: Dana Zandstra, Daniel (Kimmy) Zandstra, Christa (Travis) Owen, Cara (Mike) Frederick, Jon (Jessie) Klein, Jackie Higdon, John A (Annie) Zandstra, Steve (Megan) Zandstra, Jared (Kate) Zandstra, Luke (Kayla) Zandstra, James (Laura) Zandstra, Tom (Beth) Zandstra, and Jake (Lilly) Zandstra. Barb was blessed with eighteen great grandchildren: Tatum, Stevie, Beckham, Steffi, Quinn, Liam, Grayson, Jayce, Eva, Logan, Taylor, Abielle, Anneke, Graham, Betsy, Joanna, Willson, and Delphine.

Visitation will be held at Community United Reformed Church, located at 8405 Alexander St, Schererville, Indiana on Friday, April 11, 2025 from 3:00 pm to 5:30 pm. A Celebration of Life worship service will be held following visitation at 6:00 pm.  Pastors Russ Ooms and David Klompien will lead the service.

Interment will be in Big Rapids, MI on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at the Grant Township Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks those interested to consider a contribution to the Christian school of their choice or Unity Hospice.
