Betty Duncan Obituary

Betty Lou Duncan, age 89, went home to be with Jesus on March 20, 2020. Betty Lou was born in Fairfield, Indiana on May 17, 1930, and almost made it to her 90th birthday. She was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Those who knew her, loved her. As a minister’s wife for 59 years, she touched the lives of hundreds of parishioners, many of whom are still close friends to this day. Her children counted themselves fortunate to have her as a mother, but her grandchildren know they are the truly blessed ones. For the Duncan grandkids, few phrases evoked the same excitement as “going to Grandma’s.” She loved God with all of her heart, and her Christian legacy lives on in her family, all of whom know and love Jesus. Her beautiful and long-lasting marriage to Rev. Arlace Duncan is a further testament of who she was. Married on September 13, 1952, only months before Rev. Duncan left to serve our country in the Korean War, separated for two years while he was away, and still the two celebrated 67 years of marriage last September—a marriage built on everlasting love for each other and their Lord.

Betty Lou Duncan is survived by her husband of 67 years, Rev. Arlace Duncan, son Kenton L. Duncan (m. Lorraine), daughter Debra K. Gumbiner (m. David), son Kurt A. Duncan (m. Angela), and brother Larry Powell (m. Veda), along with her nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren Kristin L. Duncan, Kara R. Gumbiner, Nathan E. Gumbiner (m. Allyson—son, Rhett), Jordan B. Duncan (m. Samantha—daughters, Lillian, Cecilia, Scarlett), Jamie A. Witter (m. Chris—son, Liam; daughter, Avery), Krysta K. Gumbiner, Kevin A. Duncan, Cameron J. Duncan, and Brent A. Duncan.

Unfortunately due to government restrictions, we are unable to hold a much-deserved funeral and memorial at this time. The family will gather to lay her to rest on their own. We will notify friends and extended family in the future regarding a memorial service. The family wants to thank Kim, a nurse at Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana, for staying with Betty Lou during her last hours and for holding her hand as she entered heaven. The family asks that friends and family wait until her memorial service to send flowers.
