Charles Michael Szo, 84, of Dolton Illinois, peacefully passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on February 8, 2026.
Born in Fót, Hungary, Charles built a life rooted in hard work, laughter, and unwavering devotion to his family. He spent many years as a steel worker, a career that reflected his strength, perseverance, and pride in honest work.
Charles was an awesome father, a devoted grandfather and Papa, a proud great-grandfather, and a loving uncle. Family was the center of his world, and his love showed in his constant presence, his humor, and the joy he found in being surrounded by those he cherished.
He had a special gift for making people laugh and seemed to know everyone he met. His warmth, quick wit, and friendly spirit made others feel instantly at ease. A lifelong Chicago Whites Sox fan, Charles remained loyal through every season, sharing his passion for the game with enthusiasm and good humor.
Charles is survived by his children, Elizabeth (Michael) Judge, Charlene (Michael) Reynders, Linda Szo, and Steven Szo; grandchildren, Michelle (Stephen) Nathasingh, Jennifer (Gilbert) Hernandez, Ashley (Thomas) Doppler, Jessica (Jeremy) Hart, Casey Reynders, and Matthew (Alison) Carlassare; great-grandchildren, Annabella and Mason Carlassare and Easton Hart.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sandra Szo; parents, Michael and Elizabeth Szo; and brothers, Steven Szo and Lazlo Szo.
Charles will be remembered for his big heart, infectious laughter, strong work ethic, and the deep love he had for his family. HIs legacy lives on through the many generations who adored him and the countless lives he touched.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026 from 4:00pm - 8:00pm at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN.
Mass of Christian Burial to be held at St. James the Less Catholic Church 9640 Kennedy Avenue, Highland, IN on Friday, February 20, 2026 at 10:30am with visitation from 10:00am until time of Mass.
Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens, Crown Point, IN.
