David G. Carrubba

David Carrubba, 80, passed away peacefully at home on January 18, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.

Though he might have claimed otherwise, David had a soft spot a mile wide for those he cared about. His gruff exterior and legendary "crabby old man" charm were simply his way of showing love — and perhaps giving you a little something to laugh about later.

David was the beloved father of Michael Carrubba, Donna (Ken) Carrubba, and Dawn (Roy) Rogers, and the adored grandfather of Matthew (Marisol) Reeves, Megan (Scott) Custer, and Ryan Carrubba, and loving brother to Patricia Settle and Jack (Merry Louise) Younkers. Preceding him in death were his birth mother Rhoda Younkers, and his devoted parents Frank Guy and Mary Carrubba. He leaves behind many loving friends and family members who will forever cherish his memory.

David spent his career at Burgess Trucking, where his expertise in trucking and fixing things was matched only by his talent for telling everyone else how they were doing it wrong. In retirement, he turned his attention to woodworking and tinkering — ensuring that everything he built was his way, which, naturally, was the right way.

Though he might not have openly admitted it, David had a huge soft spot for dogs and cats, an enduring love for the simple joys in life, like feeling the sun on his face. He was the kind of person who could fix anything — whether it was a broken chair or a rough day — and while he might give you a grumble or two in the process, there was no one you’d rather have in your corner.

David’s life was a testament to love and loyalty. Beneath that exterior was a man who would do anything for his family, friends, and even the occasional stranger lucky enough to cross his path.

David will be remembered with love, laughter, and countless funny stories. May his memory be as enduring as the lessons he taught, the love he gave, and the many "right" ways he shared with all of us.

A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 from 11:00a.m. to 1:30p.m. at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Rd. (one block south of Ridge Road) Highland, IN, 46322 .

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests doing something in true David style: fix something for someone, help a stray animal, enjoy a sunny day, or simply spend time with someone you love.
