David Schoon Obituary

Lowell, Ind. David L. Schoon, aged 84, passed away Friday, September 12, 2025.

David was a musician nearly his whole life and a chemistry/physics teacher for all of his week-day working career.

He graduated from Gary’s Horace Mann High School in 1958, earned both a bachelor’s and then a master’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington, and then later a bachelor’s degree in music from Valparaiso University.

From age 18 to age 83 he served several northwest Indiana churches as church organist, retiring this last September from that position at First United Methodist Church in Lowell, Indiana. Previous to that, he had served as organist at churches in Gary and Crown Point. David was an active member and had served as dean of the Northwest Indiana chapter of the American Guild of Organists. For several summers David played the violin in the pit orchestra for the Ross Summer Music Theatre. In addition to his instrumental talents, David sang for many years with the Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra Chorus, and for more than 40 years, with the Messiah Choir at the Michigan City Presbyterian Church.

For 44 years, David taught high school physics and chemistry first at Gary’s Lew Wallace High School and later at Crown Point High School. After retirement, he then taught physics part-time at Calumet Christian School in Griffith, Indiana.

He was a member of Lake Hills Baptist Church and in his younger years, a member of the Gary Masonic Lodge where he served both as organist and as an officer rising to Master of the lodge in 1976. After that lodge closed, he transferred his membership to Colfax Lodge of Lowell, Indiana, which will conduct a Masonic service at the funeral home Thursday evening at 6:30 pm.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Lester and Vivian Schoon. He is survived by his two brothers Kenneth and Ronald, four nephews, and their families. Friends can meet with the family at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Road) in Highland, IN on Thursday, September 18, 2025 from 4:00 pm  to 7:00 pm.
