Deborah Faye Jacobs, of Portage, Indiana passed away on Monday, July 20, 2026 in Munster, IN at the William J. Riley Memorial Residence. She passed away after a year and a half long fight against lung cancer. Her family appreciates the loving care that she received during her final weeks and days from the staff of Hospice of the Calumet Area and the Riley Residence.
Deborah was born on October 12, 1961 in Cullman, Alabama. She spent most of her life as a resident of Portage, Indiana.
Deborah is survived by her children, Edith (Charles) McClelland, and Brett Jacobs. Her grandchildren Tommy Witt, Grace Krueger, Gretchen Krueger, Andrew McClelland, and Avery McClelland; and her brother, John (Lynn) Ashwander.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lewis Ashwander and Mary Ashwander; her daughter, Amy Barr; and her life long best friend, Donna Scolari (Embry).
Deborah was an avid morel mushroom hunter, and an excellent cook. She enjoyed thrift shopping, spending time with her family, and loved animals. During her final months she enjoyed watching her favorite television shows and playing games on her tablet.
Despite her lifelong battle with alcoholism and mental illness she retained her faith in God. She was open about her mental health conditions to lessen the stigma related to treatment for mental illness. She is now free from the struggles and pain that burdened her in life and went home to be with the Lord. While we are saddened to see her go, we are relieved that she is now at peace.
Per the wishes of her family, no services will be held. Donations can be made to the William J. Riley Memorial Residence of Hospice of the Calumet Area. Hillside Funeral Home in Highland, IN is assisting the family with cremation arrangements.
