Doris H. Matthews

Doris H. (nee Carlson) Matthews was born in Chicago on August 28, 1930 and lived most of her life in East Chicago, Indiana. She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family in Schererville, Indiana on May 7th. She is preceded in death by her loving husband of 44 years, David D. Matthews; her parents Gus and Helen (Chirogan) Carlson; her siblings Edwin (Dolores) Carlson, Lorraine Carlson, Helen (Jim) Zajac and Gus R. Carlson.

Beloved mother of seven children - Laura (Greg) Starcevich, Donna Zavesky, David A. (Anette) Matthews, Linda Adams, Timothy (Irma) Matthews, James (Alissia) Matthews, and Daniel (Erna) Matthews. She was dearest grandmother of Russel (Erin) Starcevich, Kristen (Andrew) Mack, Malayna Zavesky and fiancé Matt Byquist, Tara Matthews, David Matthews and fiancé Leah Burch, Vanessa Matthews, Michael D. Adams and fiancé Alexandria Bremer, Luke Adams, Timothy Matthews, Jr., Andres Matthews, Joshua Matthews, Mia Matthews, Christopher Smith, Kyle Chmielewski, Ryan Chmielewski, Courtney Chmielewski, Rachel Chmielewski, Kenneth De Ausen and Megan Matthews. Great grandmother of Alivia Matthews, Alexis Matthews, and Ethan Starcevich. She was a fond aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Doris graduated from Washington High School in 1949. Prior to marriage she worked at Queen Anne Candy, Indiana Bell Telephone Company, and later retired from Our Lady of Mercy Hospital as a telephone operator. She enjoyed planning celebrations and entertaining everyone with her accordion. She was an avid bowler in her younger years, a great baker and loved sewing for her family. Doris was a devout Catholic who sacrificed for her children to have a Catholic education. She was a devoted wife and mother and will be sadly missed by her family.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at St. James the Less Catholic Church, 9640 Kennedy Ave, Highland, IN 46322, with a visitation at the church preceding the mass beginning at 9:45 AM.  Burial will follow mass at St. John Catholic Cemetery, Hammond, IN.
