Dorothy Whittaker

Dorothy Whittaker, 87, of Griffith, Indiana, passed away peacefully on December 21, 2025. She was born on November 10, 1938, in Jasper County, Indiana, to Charles and Dorothy Uhrhammer.

Dorothy lived a life defined by kindness, quiet strength, and a warm sense of humor. She was deeply supportive of those around her, always offering encouragement, care, and a smile when it was needed most. A devoted and hardworking woman, she took pride in doing things well and caring for others.

Dorothy dedicated 30 years of service to the United States Postal Service, where she became one of the first female mail carriers to retire from the Hammond Post Office. Her career was a source of great pride and reflected her perseverance, reliability, and strong work ethic.

Outside of work, Dorothy embraced life with joy. She loved traveling, gardening, and spending time outdoors, especially enjoying long walks at local parks. She was an enthusiastic country line dancer and square dancer, finding happiness, community, and laughter on the dance floor. In adulthood, she was also involved with the Sea Cadets, a small but meaningful part of her life that reflected her respect for service and discipline.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Kyle; her daughter, Susan; her parents, Charles and Dorothy Uhrhammer; her brothers, Chuck and Pete; and her sisters, Annie and Minnie.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Judy and Robert (Bob); her brother, John; her sister, Caroline; four grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and many extended family members, all of whom were deeply loved and cherished. Her life leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, humility, and quiet pride that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew her.

Services will be held at Hillside Funeral Home, located at 8941 Kleinman Road, Highland, Indiana 46322. Visitation will take place on Monday December 29, from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a service to follow immediately after visitation.
