Edna Mae Millspaugh

July 8, 1939 ~ April 25, 2022 (age 82)

Obituary

Edna Mae Millspaugh age 82 of Gary, IN passed away Monday, April 25, 2022.

She was born July 8, 1939, in Cherokee, Oklahoma and lived there until she was 2 when the family moved to Indiana in 1941.  Edna lived with her parents until their death and lived alone caring for herself with the aid of her nieces and brothers.

Edna is survived by her brothers Kenneth and Roy (Lark) Millspaugh and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death was her parents Rolla and Alice Millspaugh, brothers Floyd Edward Millspaugh and Melvin Guy Millspaugh.

Edna spent her years doing craft work, sewing, doing jig-saw puzzles, and copying the Bible by hand several times.  Her nieces kept her busy with trips and outings.  She traveled to Massachusetts with her Salvation Army niece, participating in ringing bells for the Christmas kettles.  She loved her trips to her niece in Wheatfield, Indiana, visiting with the children and being entertained by family gatherings. She got to see a calf born and told us all about that trip.

In her last years Edna  found in her niece Kerri a friend and caretaker.  She went with Kerri to buy groceries, shop for clothes, and to see the doctors.  Kerri made sure she made and kept her doctor appointments and that she got her medications.  Edna has many nieces that cared and love her, but Edna’s brothers are especially appreciative for Kerri who reminded them many times of Edna’s needs.

Edna did poorly in school but she did have a remarkable memory, knowing events and dates most have long forgotten.  Edna has 11 aunts and uncles,  as many as 40 first cousins. She remembered all their birthdays and dates of death. She recounted in detail the train ride from Oklahoma to Nebraska to Indiana when she was 2 years old when the family moved.   During  family get-togethers she was asked to tell about her brothers when they were young and would “pester” her.   Fun to hear her give the younger people this history.

Edna’s last days were pain free, her doctors were amazed. The nursing staff all liked her.  She would sing “church” hymns to nursing staff and visitors.  And she liked to hear hymns played for her.

We will miss her and her nightly report, “Front door lock, side door lock.”

She is to be laid to rest at Calumet Park Cemetery next to her parents.

Family and friends will meet at 10:00 am, April 29, 2022 at Calumet Park Cemetery Chapel, 2305 W 73rd Ave, Merrillville, IN 46410. Officiating Salvation Army Officer Jeffrey Hardy.
