George Click Obituary

George Richard Click, at the age of 82, peacefully passed and went to be with the Lord on Friday, November 25, 2022. George was born on February 14, 1940 (our Valentine baby) in Flat Creek, Jefferson County, Alabama to his parents of Dan and Corine (Snyder) Click.

While working at his sister Margaret’s café in Birmingham, Alabama, George met the love of his life, Bettie Jean Acker. They moved to Hammond, Indiana, married on March 10, 1962, and began building their life together. This past March, they celebrated 60 years of marriage. Those 60 years were focused not just on a marriage, but on a family of 2 sons that would grow to include a daughter-in-law and 2 grandchildren. Family was always the primary focus for George.

In addition to being a husband and a father, George was employed as a tractor driver for nearly 40 years by Republic Steel in South Chicago, IL. He retired from Republic in 1999. A few short months after his retirement, George embarked on a second career with a greater passion. He became a grandpa, or as we call him, Paw Paw.

George was a longtime devoted member of Woodmar Baptist Church in Hammond, Indiana. While there, he dutifully supported the church and its congregation. His faith and church community were important to him.

George was a quiet and unassuming man. His actions frequently spoke louder than his words. He taught us by example, instilling in us the values of respect, patience, and caring for others. He was an unconditionally loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law, and friend. He always had a kind word for everyone he encountered. We will forever live with the beautiful memories and experiences we shared with him.

Being a Southerner at heart, he may have left the South many years ago, but the South never left him. It shines through in his relaxed soft-spoken southern drawl; and in his warm social greetings asking how everyone was doing. George had an interesting hobby in people watching. Anywhere he went, he came home with stories and observations. He was also an avid fan of classic country music and vintage cars (particularly 40’s and 50’s).

George is survived by his children, Richard Click and Steve (Julie) Click; his grandchildren, Austin Click and Ava Click; his brother Dan Click, Jr; his sisters, Margaret Banks; Peggy Rogers; Judy (Bruce) Wynn; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

George is preceded in death by his wife, Bettie (Acker) Click; his sisters, Ethel (Narvey) Hicks; Maggie (Walter) Thomas; and his brother Robert (Lorraine) Click.

The public viewing will be Saturday, December 3, 2022 from 9AM- 12PM at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Rd), Highland, Indiana. Funeral services will begin at 12PM at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center. A graveside service will follow at Elmwood Cemetery, Hammond, Indiana.
