George Rylander Obituary

George Rylander, 96, of Highland, Indiana passed away on Sunday, January 21, 2024. George was born in Chicago, IL on September 27, 1927 to Anton and Ellen (Thibedeau) Rylander. George is survived by four daughters, Emily (Walter) Novak, Alice (late Robert) Borg, Mary Gundry, and Peggy Rylander.  Also survived by one brother, David Rylander of Costa Rica, a sister-in-law Jessie (Kenneth) Mahala and his cherished grandchildren: Walter (Kathleen) Novak, Lisa (Tyler) Vaughan, AJ Gundry, Lindsey (James) Hite, Alicia (Robert) Schwartz, Jae Borg, Jonathan (Roger) Borg, Nathaniel Rylander, and his special adopted grandchildren Kat Bicek, Brooke Kvaternick, and Nexia Williams. George was the proud great-grandpa of Maddison, Jocelyn, Grayden, James, Katherine, Caroline, Camryn, Edwin, Abigail, Judith and Robert. He was blessed with many nieces, nephews, close relatives and friends.

George was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 71 years, Margaret “Marge” Rylander, his parents, five brothers, two sisters, son-in-law, Robert Borg and grandson, Paul Novak.

George served in the Merchant Marines, and the Navy and was a veteran of World War II. He was a 1990 retiree of Lever Brothers Co in Hammond, IN and was an active part of their retiree club. He made many lifelong friendships during his years as an electrician and was involved in the Social Athletic Club and the Lever Brothers Federal Credit Union.

George and Margaret enjoyed 14 years living in their dream home in Southwest Florida and another 8 years living in beautiful Nashville, Tennessee, before returning to Highland in 2014. During that time George was an active part of the Shriners, Eastern Stars and was a Mason. He also happily shared his talents as an electrician with his home churches.

George and Margaret were known for their homemade pizza and were delighted to share their cooking with any organization, church, or club they were involved in.

A memorial will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Highland on Saturday, April 6th. Visitation will be at 10:00 am, a memorial service at 11:00 am followed by a luncheon in the church hall.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
