Georgia Pontious Butler, 85, of Mishawaka, Indiana (formerly of St. John, Indiana, Leesburg, Florida, and Maggie Valley, North Carolina), passed away on September 9, 2023. Born on February 1, 1938, in Hammond, Indiana.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Fred and Mae Scarcelli, Sr., loving husbands, Stanley Pontious and Billy Butler, her brother, Fred (Carol) Scarcelli, Jr., and her sister, "Little Carol" Scarcelli.
Before retiring, Georgia was a dedicated registered nurse. She began her career at both Hammond and Whiting Clinics and later served as the nurse for Highland High School, where she mentored countless students for 15 years. She also worked at Our Lady of Mercy Hospital in Dyer, Indiana, in the Adolescent Psychiatric Unit.
Georgia had a passion for singing, a quick and witty sense of humor, a genuine interest in the people she met, and an impeccable sense of style. She also enjoyed living in the mountains of Western North Carolina.
Georgia's faith was an essential part of her life. She worshipped, taught Sunday school, and vacation Bible school at the First Church of God in Munster, Indiana, and later attended Maggie Valley United Methodist Church in North Carolina.
In her free time, Georgia enjoyed interior decorating, traveling, reading, and watching Indiana University Men's Basketball. She found great joy in singing with her church choir and was a valued member of the Northwest Indiana Symphony Chorus for several years.
Georgia is survived by her loving daughters, Laura (Amy) Bolakowski, Heather Pontious, Jennifer Pontious and several nieces and nephews. Her legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 from 9:00am to 11:00am with a funeral service at 11:00am at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN 46322.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Georgia's memory can be made to the American Alzheimer's Association or Traditions Health Hospice of Mishawaka, Indiana.
