Gerard A. Mesman, lovingly known as Jerry, 69, of Gary, Indiana, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2025. Born on April 20, 1956, in Gary IN, Jerry graduated from Highland High School in 1974 and proudly served his country in the United States Army.
Jerry worked as a dedicated truck driver for Oakley Transportation, where his strong work ethic and easygoing nature earned the respect of many. He was a man who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life: fishing, hunting, gardening, and camping at Hoffman Lake. He especially loved taste-testing Taylor’s baked goods, cheering on his favorite NASCAR drivers, the Chicago White Sox, and spending time with his beloved dogs. Jerry never missed a chance for a good conversation—he truly had the gift of gab and left a lasting impression wherever he went.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Debbie Mesman; his children Jason Mesman, Gerard Mesman II (April), and Mike Thompson (Mandie); grandchildren Brianne, Cody, Savannah, and Taylor; and great-grandson Lucas. He is also survived by his siblings: Wes Mesman (Carol), Joyce Kagy, Harriet Dyke (Bill), Don Mesman (Linda), Jenny Kornas, Beverly Zuidema (Rick), Bonnie Kolodziej (Michael), and Dennis Mesman (Dominga), along with many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Jenny Mesman, and his brother, John Mesman.
A visitation will be held on May 22, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Trailside Community Church, 7045 Lenburg Rd, Portage, IN. Military honors will take place at 4:00 PM, with a service to follow. Jerry’s final resting place will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Illinois at a later date.
