Ingeborg "Inge" Basile Obituary

Ingeborg “Inge” E. Basile, age 87, arrived in heaven on December 24, 2025. She was surrounded by her loving family as she left this world and went to meet our Creator.

Inge is survived by her devoted husband, Richard Basile, Sr. and her children, Dr. Richard Jr. (Christine) Basile, Monika Basile and Michele (Joseph) Lawrence. Inge was “Oma” to her grandchildren, Scott Segally, Nathan Segally, Lily (Patrick) Dever, Natalie Basile, Katherine (Kevin) West, Lexie (Russell) Lawrence, Maverick Lawrence and Trey Basile; great grandmother to Charlie, Luna, Solon, Zoey, Kennedy, Patrick V and Klaire. Inge is survived by her sister, Iemgard Schauber in Germany. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ludwig and Marie Sporrer and her sister and brother-in-law, Lore and Gerhard Swaboda.

Inge was known to be a bit of a firecracker. She was brave and unafraid to speak her mind or voice her thoughts. She grew up in a war torn country yet still completed her education and spoke 5 languages. Inge was fiercely independent and somewhat of a rule breaker. Fear never stopped her from accomplishing anything she put her mind to. She left home at 16 and made a life for herself until she met Richard, an American GI. They fell in love very quickly and decided to marry. Inge had the courage to travel far from her home to a new country not knowing anyone but Richard. They were married for 61 amazing years. In the summer of 2001, Inge became an American citizen. Though Germany would always be dear, she truly felt like America was home.

Inge was an avid reader, talented seamstress, knitting and crocheting beautiful sweaters and baby clothes. She loved her garden and especially her roses. She was partial to Forget Me Nots but was disappointed in the ones in America. On one visit back to Germany she smuggled German seeds to plant in her garden in America. They bloomed in Calumet City for many years. Inge loved crossword puzzles as well as jigsaw puzzles and actually would complete both. She belonged to a hiking club and hiked with Richard in beautiful state parks. Her favorite was Starved Rock. Inge loved birds and bird watching, she was constantly battling the squirrels from the bird feeders.

Most of all, Inge loved her family. She has always been their biggest cheerleader and most vocal advocate. Inge always said that if her family were with her this was all she needed.

A visitation will be at Hillside Funeral Home, 8941 Kleinman Road, Highland, IN on Saturday, January 10th, 2025 from 10am until 12pm. Service will be at 12pm. In lieu of flowers a donation to the Disabled Veterans would be appreciated. This was Inge’s favorite charity as she felt very blessed her husband came back whole from the war and felt the need to offer support to those who did not.
