John J. Gallegos, 82, passed away at home peacefully surrounded by his family on Thursday, August 24, 2023. He was born on November 13, 1940 in Greenwich, Kansas to Leonardo and Rosa Gallegos, both of whom preceded him in death.
On August 8,1960 in East Chicago, IN, John married the love of his life, Rosalie C. (Toth) Gallegos, and they were married for 63 wonderful years.
John is also survived by his loving children, Frank (Jessica) Gallegos of Merrillville, IN, Christine (James) Williamson of Crown Point, IN, Patricia Nagy (Kraig Gabelman) of Clinton, OH, Johnny (Joyce) Gallegos of Paw Paw, MI and Michael (Karin) Gallegos of Hammond, IN; grandchildren, Shannon, Jessica, Jennifer, Trista, Stephanie, Kathryn, Sara, Stacy, Michael, Alyssa and Jenavine and 18 ½ great-grandchildren; his beloved dog, Sophie; sisters, Trina, Esther and Hope; brother, Macario and by his many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, Tony (Chief).
John will be remembered for being a great guy and for his devotion to caring for family, friends and neighbors. John loved his Chicago sports teams… especially Da Bears. John was an avid Bears and Bulls fan. John enjoyed fishing, billiards, John Wayne movies, spending time with his family, a good dad joke, and spending time at the casino.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 31, 2023 at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Rd, (one block south of Ridge Road) Highland, IN 46322 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. In honor of John’s love for Chicago sports, feel free to wear your favorite sports apparel for visitation. Funeral Services will be held Friday, September 1, 2023 with visitation beginning 9:00 am – 10:00 am at the church, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 7132 Arizona Ave. ​Hammond IN 46323 with Rev. Charles A. Mosley officiating. Interment to follow at Saint John-Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Hammond, IN. Procession to the cemetery after Mass.
