John Nagy, age 89, peacefully passed away on March 29, 2026, at his home, surrounded by love.
He is survived by four of his children: David Nagy (Maryann), Michael Nagy (Dale), Terry Nagy, and Monica Nagy (Don Markovich); his loving sister, Margaret Hasse (William, deceased); many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews; and his dear friend and caregiver, Patti Sabourin.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Nagy; his brother, William Nagy; his sister, Helen Teets; and his eldest daughter, Patricia Majkowski.
John was born on October 22, 1936, in East Chicago, Indiana. He grew up in Hammond and graduated from Oliver P. Morton High School in 1954. After graduation, he proudly served in the U.S. National Guard while beginning his career at Inland Steel as a welder apprentice. Over the years, he worked at Blast Furnace No. 2 as a welder, advanced to foreman, and later became a mechanic in the shop.
John loved his work deeply and often said he wished he could go back twenty years just to do it all again. He remained dedicated to the mill—later known as Cleveland-Cliffs—until 2024, retiring at the remarkable age of 87 after 69 years of service, making him the longest-employed worker in the company’s history.
As a young man, John played both the trombone and trumpet in a quartet, performing big band music. He also enjoyed boating, fishing, hunting, traveling, and watching World War II documentaries.
John came of age during a difficult time and grew up without his father, experiences that shaped him into a complex and resilient man. Despite life’s challenges, he loved his family deeply. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 4, 2026 at 10:00am followed by a funeral service at 12:00pm with Pastor Randy Harrison officiating at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road, Highland, Indiana.
