He is survived by his wife of 69 years Josephine Simmons; children, John (Barbara) Simmons, Joe (Susan) Simmons, Jeff (Mary) Simmons, and Jay (Beth) Simmons; grandchildren John (Erica) Simmons, Kelly Simmons, Meagan (Patrick) Simmons, Joseph (Alyssa) Simmons, Tristan (Eryn) Simmons, Jeffrey Simmons, Hannah Simmons, Hanna (Ryan) Tapp, Sarah (David) Higgins; great-grandchildren Mason Simmons, Elliott Simmons, Grayson Higgins, Graham Higgins, Nora Tapp, Isaiah Tapp, Kennedy Tapp, Jeremiah Tapp, and Daphne Tapp.
John was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary Simmons; siblings Mary Jane Feinstein, Margaret Duffala and Joseph Simmons.
John was born on August 23, 1930 in Hammond, Indiana and was a 1949 graduate of Hammond High School and went on to proudly serve our country in the US Marine Corp. On August 19, 1956 he married Josephine Zralka and they shared 69 years together, settling in Highland to raise their family where he was a member of Our Lady of Grace Parish and an usher for Sunday mass. John worked for Cargill at their South Chicago grain elevator and retired after 36 years of service. After retirement he continued service to his community assembling and delivering meals to those in need though his work with St. Vincent DePaul in Hammond.
John enjoyed cheering for all Chicago teams but had a special place in his heart for the Black Hawks, Bears, and White Sox. He spent much of his time watching his four sons sporting events attending more youth baseball, basketball, and football games than can be counted.
Always a supportive fan he coached Highland Little League and Babe Ruth baseball, touching the lives of many through his focus on sportsmanship and playing the game right. His commitment to his family and strong work ethic were qualities that set him apart. He always had time for a friendly word and loved spending time with family and friends.
John was a loving son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and friend and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggest donations to the Hospice of the Calumet Region or American Legion Post 66.
