Juanita (Smith) Hurt

Juanita (Smith) Hurt, 98, of Highland, Indiana passed away on February 9, 2020.  Juanita was born in Eden, Kentucky and moved to Whiting, Indiana at the age of five.  She was a graduate of Whiting High School.  Upon the death of her husband, Andrew Stepich, in World War II, Juanita enlisted in the Women's Army Corp and served until the end of the war.  She later married Ernest C. Hurt Jr., with whom she had four children, Scott Hurt, Kristin (BJ) Zandstra, Jane (late Robert) Kasting, and Dwight Hurt (Lucinda Smith). Juanita worked as a records clerk and secretary to the Chief of the Highland Police Department for over 30 years.  She was a charter member of the First Christian Church of Highland.
Besides her children, Juanita is survived by five grandchildren, Kristin (Adel) Karam, Christina (Trevor) Smith, Melissa Whiting, Sabrina Franklin, and Richard (Mikala)) Franklin, as well as 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by husbands Andrew Stepich and Ernest Hurt, and granddaughter Michelle Kasting.  The family will conduct private services at a future time.
