Judith C. Wahl,(nee Wilson) formerly of Hammond, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on September 15, 2025 at the age of 87, in Monticello, IN.
Born to Vernon & Freida Wilson on December 6, 1937
She was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Patricia Jackson.
Judy is survived by her children, Susan Sassman of Lafayette, Tennessee, William (Gail) Sassman of Monon, IN, Cindy Rudnickas (Andy) of Highland, IN and Thomas (Stephanie) Wahl of DeMotte, IN. Neice Kim Kim (Art) of Plainfield, IL and Nephew Chris Jackson of Michigan
She is also survived by grandchildren, Kirsten (Chip) Atkinson, Michael (Katie) Sassman, Patrick Allan, Danielle Rudnickas, Richard (Kim) Sassman, Amy (Chuck) Burnett, Leo (Jamie) Jarecki, Richard Elder, Bobbie McManus, Isaac, Caleb, Caroline and Korynn Wahl
She was also blessed with19 great-grandchildren, and 10 Great-great grandchildren
Judy was a dedicated mother and raised her four children singlehanded and always encouraged them to live to their fullest potential.
She was dedicated to her community and was active on many fronts in Hammond.
Judy was a Driving Examiner, and held several positions with the City of Hammond in the Health Department, Water Department & Marina and finally finishing up her working years with the Hammond Police Department, Records Division.
Judy was always seeking opportunities to improve the city that she loved and worked tirelessly for the kids by being a founding board member of the Hammond Boys & Girls Club, starting the “Hammond Just Say No!” Club, leading the Red Ribbon Campaign and the Harrison Park Neighborhood Assn. Her experience with domestic violence inspired her to found and support Haven House in Hammond.
Judy especially loved the kids of Haven House and held a Christmas Toy Drive every year for fifteen years.
Judy also enjoyed working in the Republican Party in Hammond and was the first woman to serve as Republican City Chairman, where she became friends with Governors and Presidents and was awarded Lake County Republican of the Year.
She also served as National Secretary for the Sigma-Alpha Sorority Delta-Omega Chapter.
Gardening was a passion and she loved tending her garden that included many of the plants that she transplanted from her grandmothers garden.
Judy also served as an Elder & Sunday School teacher at First Presbyterian Church of Hammond.
Visitation with the family will be held at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Rd (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN, 46322 on Friday, September 26, 2025 from 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm with a memorial service beginning at 6:30 pm.
