Kathleen Rae Stewart

Kathleen Rae “Kath” Stewart, age 69, of Gary, Indiana, passed away on April 26, 2026, in Merrillville, Indiana.  She was born on January 31, 1957, in Gary, Indiana, to her parents John and Ida (Romo) Sovinski.

Kathleen lived a life rooted in love, care, and dedication to those around her.  She spent many years working as a caregiver, offering compassion and comfort to those in need.  She had a true gift for cooking and took great joy in preparing meals for the people she loved, bringing family together in the simple, meaningful ways that mattered most.  She loved her family, children, and was very proud to be a grandma.

She is preceded in death by her parents, John Sovinski and Ida Romo Sovinski; sister, Martha Sepuvada (Joe) Sepuvada); brother, Richard Gomez; and brother-in-law, Santos Hernandez.

Kathleen is lovingly remembered by her sisters, Pauline Garcia (Martin Garcia), Vivian Hernandez, Cynthia Sovinski, and sister-in-law, Marcella Gomez.  She is also survived by her sons, Joshua Stewart and Frankie Stewart (Alicia); and her cherished grandson, Joshua Raintree; along with many nieces and nephews.

Kathleen loved her family deeply and shared as special closeness with her sisters.  Her spunky spirit, caring heart, and the love she gave so freely will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
