Kevin James Smith, of Merrillville, Indiana, passed away on August 25, 2025, peacefully at home on a beautiful, cool August morning, with his loving wife, his loyal pack of dogs, and his very opinionated talking parrot at his side. He was 61 years old.
Kevin bravely fought a long battle with cancer, showing the same courage and strength that defined his life. He is survived by his devoted wife, Anastasia (Bocanegra) Smith; his beloved son, Kyle (Tayler); his brother, Bryan (Mary), his siter, Rachelle; his nephews, Austin (Ashley) and Eric; and his grand-niece, Astella. He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Mary Smith, and his brother, Mark. Kevin also leaves behind many cherished uncles, aunts, cousins, and extended family.
A dedicated public servant, Kevin was the Chief Medic and Training Officer for the City of Gary, Indiana, where he saved countless lives and mentored many in the field of emergency medicine. He was most proud of his service to others, as well as his roles as a husband and father.
Kevin loved the outdoors, whether hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the fresh air. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan and treasured time spent with family and friends.
He will be remembered for his unwavering bravery, quick wit, deep compassion, and the countless lives he touched.
Visitation will be Tuesday, September 2, 2025 at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Rd (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN, 46322 from 3:00 pm to 6:30 pm with a Funeral Service at 6:30 pm.
