Leona M. “Lee” Newberry, 100, of Elberfeld, Indiana formerly of Griffith, Indiana passed away on Friday, February 6, 2026.
She is survived by her daughter, Laura (late Steven Sr) Carpenter, Four Grandchildren: Steven Jr. (Tricia) Carpenter, Kelly Gries, Aubrey W. (Kim) Carpenter, and Julie (Mark) Auler; 10 Great Grandchildren: Brandon (Jessica) Carpenter, Rebecca (David) Brady, Jacob (Anita) Gries, Nick (Kendra) Gries, Luke Gries, Brooklen (Carl) Sustik, Aubrey Paige (Adam) Rollins, Kaytlyn (Brett) Brown, Jonnica (Bryan) Fisher and Andrew (Alexis) Auler. She was blessed to have 17 Great Great Grandchildren with three more expected to arrive this Spring, one sister Jo Young, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lee was born and raised in Logansport, and moved to Cedar Lake, Indiana where she met Aubrey Newberry at Coleman’s Corner. They were married in 1946, and raised their daughter Laura in Griffith.
She was preceded in death by her husband Aubrey, her son in law Steve, Granddaughter Jenny, Parents Michael and Jenny Buttice, Parents In Law Paul and Laura Newberry, Sisters Mary and Clara, and Brothers Charlie, Geno and John.
Lee was a member of St. Mary’s Church in Griffith before moving to Southern Indiana and served on the Altar and Rosary Society. She was a life member of the American Legion Post 66, and the VFW Post 982. She retired from Mapes in Griffith and then worked in the cafeteria at Griffith High School.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 at 11:00 a.m at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center with Father Keith Virus officiating. Burial at Chapel Lawn Cemetery in Schererville, Indiana. Friends are invited to visit with the family from 9:00 a.m – 11:00 a.m before the funeral services, at 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Road) in Highland, Indiana, 46322.
Lee loved being a Mother and Grandmother! She enjoyed going on Casino trips with her friends, playing Bingo, and recently she enjoyed making arts and crafts for her family! She will be greatly missed.
