Maria Cruz (Hernandez) Thomas

               MARIA CRUZ THOMAS 

Departed from this earth on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at the age of 86 years old. She was born on May 7, 1936 in Ciudad Madero, Tamaulipas México to the late Amalia Godinez de Hernandez and Jose Cruz Hernandez and was the only child.  During her younger years she was raised in San Luis Potosi, México and attended Elementary Federal School (“Tipo 21 de Agosto”) graduating in 1948.  She continued her education and in 1952 she decided to enroll to receive her Bachelor's Degree as an educator in the (Escuela Normal del Estado) 1958.  Her passion was to provide the best education to young children and was a firm activist against injustice and poverty for the working class and her community. She was a faithful and devoted Christian.  In 1966 at the age of 31 she married her beloved late husband, Mr. Joseph Isaac Thomas of 13 years from Bassett VA and relocated to Chicago IL.

She is survived by her daughter, Amalia Izettia; grandchildren, Alan V.T. and Brenda Izettia; great-grandchildren, Hali’a Izettia, Kevin Joseph, Mia Margaret and Elias Isaac; nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

There will be joy when we remember you fought a good fight, finished the course and kept the faith. There may be weeping for the night, but joy will come in the morning, when we remember the rich legacy of love that you left us...“The love for Christ, family and the lives that crossed your path.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 25, 2023 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Hillside Funeral Home (8941 Kleinman Road Highland, IN).
