Our beautiful and elegant mother, Marie Jane Newell (nee Walker), 93, of Schererville, IN went to be with the Lord on March 12, 2025. Marie was born on June 20, 1931, of parents Louis Walker and Elizabeth Schwartzbauer (nee Prestamer), and was a graduate of Hammond High School.
On August 12, 1950, Marie married the love of her life Joseph H. “Bud” Newell. They remained happily married for 70 years, until his death in 2021. Marie and Bud were the proud parents of four children; Joseph Jr (Cheryl), of Valparaiso, IN, Nancy Newell, of Kouts, IN, Robert (Teresa) of North Carolina, and Cathryn Stassin of Crown Point, IN. They were the grandparents of 11 grandchildren, and great grandparents of soon-to-be 13 great-grandchildren. Marie was also preceded in death by her parents, by her brother, Louis Walker of Phoenix, AZ, and by three of her grandchildren, Joshua D. Newell, Denis W. Lowe, and Lindsey E. Newell. Marie enjoyed raising her children, shopping with her many friends and sisters-in-law, playing golf, traveling, eating dinner out with numerous other couples who were life long friends. Marie also had a long time passion for oil painting. She painted many beautiful paintings, of houses in the Thomas Kincaid style, still-life of flowers or fruit – even eggs, landscapes, children's toys, portraits, and she would also paint beautiful ocean scenes. Her talent was truly special and will be a lasting legacy for all who received one or more from her, through-out her career.
A private “Celebration of Life” service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to a charity of your choice in her honor.
Crematory services provided by Hillside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, Highland, IN.
