Marie Katherine Burns Sapyta; age 88, Born on May 26, 1932 in Hammond, Indiana passed away on Tuesday February 16, 2021 at the Munster Med Inn. She had recently recovered from COVID-19 and was sent back to the Med Inn to heal as she had been a resident there since a stroke on February 15, 2015.

She is survived by her daughter Karen Sapyta; grandsons Aaron, Frank and Kyle Osorio; great-grandchildren Braylon and London Osorio and Rain Osorio. Son Michael Sapyta and granddaughter Emily Sapyta. Brother and sister-in-law James and Jan Burns of Florida; sister-in-law Lucille (Lou) Burns. Godchild Kathy Berg Lee. We had a very large family with both sides of our parents; there are many cousins, nieces, nephews and mom’s Aunt Marcella Berg Yatsko, age 103, whom she spent the past years with at Munster Med Inn. Marie had many friends she had made throughout her lifetime.
Marie was a lifelong resident of Hammond, attended All Saints Catholic School & church; proud graduate as a Hammond Tech Tiger, Class of 1950. She was a past member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church and Rosary. Member of Hessville Post VFW 7881 Ladies Auxillary; American Legion 232; Associate member of Hammond FOP Lodge #51-PTA member of Hammond schools, Hessville Little League and Babe Ruth. Marie was very active with her children as a room mother, team mother with volunteering for many events with the VFW auxiliary. She loved being on the reunion committees for Hammond Tech. Employed at Goldblatt’s, Executive secretary to the president of IHB Railroad and Pullman Standard.
Marie loved to bake, garden, exquisite taste in interior design of her home and shopping, doing puzzles, trivia, bingo, singing, going to many concerts at Holiday Star and was on a bowling team at Plaza Lanes. Marie cherished her living room so much that people were afraid to sit on the furniture! Marie had a great taste in fashion and everyone will always remember her “RED HAIRDO.” Loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family did a lot of traveling throughout the United States visiting many of the relatives and friends. Marie and Stanley went throughout many European countries 5 times, Scandinavia, Northern Africa, Cruises and many other adventures to mention. They took Karen and Mike to 12 European countries in the summer of 1975 as Stanley had reunited with 3 Belgic soldiers he met in WWII.
Marie’s final request to the eternal world was to be cremated with no funeral and joined with dad and Stosh at the family resting place. She wanted to be honored and remembered by the memories of yesterday. I will miss my mom as our relationship had grown so much since she had been in the nursing home. Thank you for always being there for me and my boys—I will forever be grateful---love you mom, Karen.
