Martha A. Whiting

Martha A. Whiting, age 88, of Hammond, IN (formerly of East Chicago), was called to her heavenly home on Monday, May 31, 2021. 

She is survived by her four daughters and one son; Pam Knight, Nancy (Richard) Luchene, both of Hammond, Robin (Arnold) Hegg of St. John, Rhonda Basham of Cedar Lake, and Todd (Mary Ellen) Basham of Hobart, nine grandchildren; Jeremy (Mandy) Luchene, Christopher (Cathy) Luchene, Eric Hegg, Brandon (Katie) Hegg, Stacey (Jon) Owen, Stefanie Knight, Rachael (Tom) Stowell, and Julianne & Ryan Basham, and nine great-grandchildren with one on the way; Tyler Luchene, Jackson Luchene, Alexa Luchene, Madison Luchene, Maci Luchene, Clayton Luchene, Greta Hegg, Riley Stowell, and Harper Stowell. 

She was preceded in death by her parents Grady & Fannie Smith, husband David Whiting, daughter Patti Basham, sister Frances Deal, and brother G.A. Smith.

Martha was a lifelong resident of the Calumet area after moving from Grand Junction, TN at age four. She served as a teacher of children through Child Evangelism Fellowship and through her church, Central Baptist of East Chicago and currently through Bible Baptist Church of Highland. 

She was a faithful prayer warrior and served when called upon. She conducted a Women's Bible Study, served as Women's Missionary Union officer, taught Jr. Church and Sunday School, was a bus captain, and a VBS worker. She made sure the children were reached for Christ. 

She was loved by many and will be missed by all who knew her. 

Visitation will be Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Bible Baptist Church, 8720 Orchard Drive, Highland, IN, 46322 from 2:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral will be at the church on Friday, June 4, 2021 at 12:00 pm
