Marvin was born to Paul and Margaret Porter on April 1, 1937, in East Chicago, Indiana. He graduated in 1955 from Morton High School and received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Special Education from Indiana State University.

Marvin was a hard-working, friendly, and caring person, who loved to joke and laugh. He could often be found exercising at Omni 41 or working at his business, Briar East Liquors in Hammond. His parents were the original owners of Porter’s Tap in Hammond, and Marvin spent many years helping in the bar. As an educator, Marvin was well-loved by students and colleagues alike. He spent many years as Director of Special Education for Lake and Porter counties and was able to secure many grants to support the program.
