Mary Ellen Haack age 62 of Highland Indiana, passed away with family by her side on Monday, June 8, 2026. She is survived by her parents Raymond and Daisy Ellen Haack; siblings, Dr. Debra Polster (Steven), Dr. Bradley Haack (Edee), and Edward Haack (Stacey); nephews, Lucas Polster (Vanessa), Dr. Nicholas Polster (fiancé Dr. Laura Fischer), Tyler, Thomas, Jacob, Ryan and niece Maya Haack; great niece Aria; baby Polster; and many other special relatives and friends.
Mary was born May 9, 1964 in Hammond, Indiana and was a 1982 graduate of Highland High School. She went on to study nursing at Purdue University Calumet in Hammond and graduated in 1985. Mary was a Registered Nurse for 42 years at Munster Community Hospital, 40 of those as the orthopedic unit charge nurse and preceptor, with the last two years in pre-admission testing. She was an RN traveler briefly in the state of Florida which she loved, in 1995. Mary was nominated twice for the Nurse of the Year annual Nurses Week awards and received multiple accolades for her caring and compassionate nursing practice. Mary enjoyed her long-standing and new nursing friendships.
Mary was the biggest fan of her nephews sporting events and spoiled her nephews with “un- birthday” presents. Mary had a big heart and gave so much of herself to others. Mary loved frequent Disney World vacations and arranging Disney family gatherings. She enjoyed the excitement of casinos and took vigilant care of her elderly parents. Mary is a lifetime member of St James the Less Catholic Church in Highland Indiana.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Road) Highland, IN 46322. There will be a 6:30 PM prayer service by Deacon Michael Halas.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2026 at 10:30 AM at St. James the Less Catholic Church 9640 Kennedy Ave Highland, Indiana.
Interment to follow at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens 8178 S Cline Ave, Crown Point, IN 46307.
