Mary Alice Seljan passed away peacefully on July 13, 2025 in her daughter’s home after a long illness. She is survived by her children, Cheryle Seljan of Highland, Terry (Sheri) Seljan of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Robert Seljan of Chicago, her last surviving sister, L’lena Holden of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, and her grandchildren Eric (Jessica) Seljan of Fishers Indiana, Mandy Jo Gunter of Portage, and Jill Gunter of Highland. She is also survived by 5 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Jack Seljan, parents, 5 sisters, 4 brothers, granddaughter Lauren Seljan, and special niece Pam DeAngelo.
Like most southern women, she loved her garden, cultivating her butter beans and canning and freezing vegetables for the winter. Mary was a great cook, and the family loved her fried chicken, big pots of beans and biscuits. She also enjoyed spending time with family, watching the Wheel with Jack, reading inspirational books, lunches out after Bible study, and was happy to travel when she was able. Mary was born and raised in North Carolina and her heart remained there. She visited often and was so happy spending time with her sisters, many nieces and nephews and eventually her son Terry. Mary was a lifelong active member of the First United Methodist church in Hammond and enjoyed her Bible study friends and volunteering for events there. She was a strong Christian woman and her faith sustained her. She worked as a beautician for many years before managing a garden center, which she loved. Mary will be missed by the many people that knew and loved her.
A Visitation will be held on Friday July 25, 2025 at 9:30 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am at The First United Methodist Church in Hammond, 6635 Hohman Ave, Hammond, IN. The family would like to thank her long-time care givers Susan Alcazar, Donna White, LaJean Fant and JD Dzurovcik from Hospice of the Calumet area for taking excellent care of Mary over the last 3 years. Donations to Hospice of the Calumet Area, https://www.hospicecalumet.org or Humane Indiana Animal Shelter, https//www.humaneindiana.org are appreciated.
