Mary "Betsy" Chorba, 87, of Hammond, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 1, 2026, at Ignite Medical Center in Dyer.
Loving mother of Loretta Lanfear and Jeff (Paige) Chorba; proud grandmother of Cameron (Chelsea) Chorba; dear sister of Kathleen (Bob) Pasztor; sister-in-law, Annette Feeney; and cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Betty Feeney; her sister, Patricia Ewing; and her brother, Mark Feeney.
Betsy was born on December 20, 1938, to Martin and Betty Feeney. She was a lifelong resident of the Whiting/Robertsdale area and a graduate of Bishop Noll High School.
In her younger years, Betsy enjoyed "cruisin" the streets of Whiting with her lifelong friend, Theresa Zebracki, with many evenings ending at the iconic Art's Drive-In. Throughout her life, she held various jobs, but some of her fondest memories were made during her years at Community Hospital.
As a devoted mother, Betsy created countless family memories, including annual summer vacations to Shafer Lake with her children. She was affectionately known to many of their friends as "Mrs. C," a testament to the welcoming and caring presence she brought into the lives of so many young people.
Betsy found great joy in working with ceramics. She shared her artistic talents by teaching classes, participating in numerous craft fairs, and spending Sunday afternoons helping children discover the joy of painting. Her creativity, patience, and willingness to share her gifts left a lasting impression on many.
Known as "Grandma B" to her beloved grandson, Cameron, Betsy rarely missed an opportunity to attend his basketball and baseball games. She took immense pride in her family and treasured every chance to celebrate their accomplishments.
Family was the center of Betsy's life. She looked forward to holidays spent with family in Indianapolis and cherished special outings with her sister, Kathleen, especially their trips to Hobby Lobby and Costco. In later years, Betsy made her home with her daughter, Loretta, in Hammond, where they enjoyed spending time together playing card games and working on jigsaw puzzles.
Anyone who knew Betsy quickly learned that she always put others before herself. Her kindness, generosity, and caring spirit made the lives of those around her better simply by having her in them. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and selflessness that will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the American Cancer Society or the Whiting Animal Shelter would be appreciated.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at Hillside Funeral Home, 8941 Kleinman Road, Highland, Indiana 46322, from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Prayers and a time of reflection with family and friends will begin at 5:30 p.m.
