Mary Jo Peters Obituary

Mary Jo (Coleman) Peters, age 77, of Highland, IN, passed away on September 16, 2025, after a courageous battle with leukemia. She was born on November 7, 1947, to the late Mildred and Joseph Coleman and was one of five children.

Mary Jo graduated from beauty school and owned her own beauty shop for many years. She spent much of her life making others feel beautiful inside and out. Among the careers she held throughout her life, she loved working at the Hallmark store for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Ernest “Skipper.” Mary Jo is survived by her loving husband, Timothy Peters, with whom she shared nearly 53 years of marriage. Together they raised three children: Joseph (Jackie), Nicholas (Nicole), and Autumn Smith (Brett). She was the proud Nana to seven grandchildren: Max, Brynnley, Kane, Cassie, Landon, Mayzee, and Nicholas. Being Nana was her greatest joy, and her grandchildren will forever cherish her unmatched love and countless thoughtful gestures.

Mary Jo is also survived by her sisters Joy and Teena, her brother Joseph “Duke,” many nieces and nephews, and her beloved dog Oscar.

She loved hosting family holidays where everyone was welcome, and her thoughtfulness always made people feel special. She had a heart that put others first, a gift for making people feel seen and loved, and a sense of humor that matched her husband well. She was blessed with many dear friends, and her giving nature touched everyone who knew her.

A lifelong fan of the Chicago Cubs and Bears, Mary Jo always believed this would be “the” year. She passed down that love to her grandchildren, who will carry on her passion for sports. She also enjoyed life’s simple pleasures such as a good Bloody Mary, margarita, or mojito, time spent with friends, and any occasion that brought her family together.

To know her was to love her. Mary Jo will be remembered for her kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness, and unwavering love for her family.
