Matthew Eyer Obituary

Matthew (Matt) Eyer, age 51, of Hobart, Indiana, walked into Heaven on Tuesday, March 10, 2026. He is survived by his wife, Amber Eyer; his four children, Isabel (Camden) Phillips of East Tennessee, Carol Eyer of East Tennessee, Caleb Eyer of Hobart, Indiana, Rebekah Eyer of Hobart, Indiana. One grandson, Nicholas Phillips. Dad, Donald Eyer. Sister, Gina (Anthony) Latta. Grandma, Vivian Gillespie. Best Friends Tim (Cheryl) Gross, Dan (Vicky) Hazzard and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his mom, Connie Eyer.
He was born in Versailles, Kentucky, on July 30, 1974. He grew up in multiple states before moving to Indiana in 1993. He met Amber (his wife) in May of 2001. He immediately knew she was the love of his life. They were married that same year, in December 2001.
When Matt was 14, his family doctor was so impressed with him, that he hired Matt to work for him. By the time he was 15 years of age, he oversaw the allergy clinic portion of the office. The doctor was from Pakistan. In high school, he did a paper on the Muslim community by studying and interviewing the doctor he worked for. The doctor told him that he was required to memorize the Quran by the time he was 12. He was so impacted by that statement that he decided that as a Christian, he should study the Bible to the same degree. He began his life’s journey of memorizing and studying Scripture. When he was a junior in high school, he had representatives from the University of Michigan come to his high school to offer a full scholarship to their medical program. His plan was to become a doctor. In the summer before his senior year, he gave up his scholarship because he wanted to spend his life studying the Bible. He enrolled in a Bible college and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1996.
After graduation he began tutoring high school and college students. In 2020, he began having issues with his neck. They discovered he needed surgery on his neck. He got to the point that he could not hold a pen or a spoon. He would eventually have spine surgery which would leave him unable to work.
Matt spent his life studying and memorizing the Bible. The Bible was the most important thing in his life. He made two statements over and over the last 4 months of his life, “There are two things important to me, the Bible and our kids. Those are the two things I do not want to forget.” His daughter said, “If God has to choose only one thing for him to remember, I hope it is his Bible. The Bible brings him peace.” The second statement he made, “I could not do this without Amber. She is my everything.”

On October 31, Matt was taken to the ER because they thought he had a stroke. The next day, on November 1, he was diagnosed with brain tumors and transferred to the University of Chicago. They did a brain biopsy and discovered he had 4 brain tumors throughout his brain connected at his spinal cord. They were inoperable stage 4 glioblastoma. Glioblastomas are very aggressive brain tumors. There are 3 types. As long as he did not have the unmethylated tumors, he would have 12-18 months. Later the biopsy would reveal his tumors were unmethylated which meant there was no treatment for the tumors. Matt spent his last 4 months spending time with what was most important to him, the Bible and family.
