Michael "Poppy" Allen Greenwell

On Tuesday, May 9, 2023, Michael "Poppy" Allen Greenwell, age 80, of Dyer, Indiana, went home in glory. 

Mike was born June 18, 1942 to John and Helen Greenwell in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Hammond High in 1960, he went on to serve in the United States Army until 1964. He attended the Carpenters Trade School in Hobart, after which he was asked to teach his skills to future graduates and create job-specific training for Amoco Oil in Whiting, Indiana. In 1971, he started his own construction company, Service Window Systems Inc., that he successfully ran for 33 years. He married his eternal partner Linda in 1970 where they began their life together in Hammond, finally settling in Dyer where they reside today. Mike was a former Bishop and dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for over 50 years. Poppy created a beautiful family full of love where his legacy continues through the unconditional love of his grandchildren. 

Mike was preceded in death by his parents John and Helen Greenwell, son-in-law David Bardin, and granddaughters Kelly Hume and Maybel Greenwell. He is survived by his wife, Linda, 11 children, Marlene (David) Bardin, Michael (Sue) Kitzinger, Mark (Sara) Greenwell, Amy Naspinski, Jennifer (Jared) Coffeen, Holly Hume, Elena (Matthew) Denning, Jody (David) Ingraham, David (Joy) Greenwell, James (Anna) Greenwell, Elizabeth (Joseph) Brown, 38 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, two siblings, John "Butch" (Brenda) Greenwell, Polly (Randy) Griffith, three nieces and two nephews. 

Visitation will be held Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 300 Wirth Rd. Griffith, Indiana from 10am-12pm with services to immediately follow. Final resting place will be Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens in Schererville, Indiana. Memorials may be made to the Humanitarian Aid Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
