He is survived by his loving wife Darlene Metten (Grass); his daughter, Leslie Braun (Metten), and her husband, Stephen; step-daughter, Lisa Schoon (Pupillo), and her husband, Ryan; step-son, Nick Pupillo, and his husband, Ray Crooks; step-son, Michael Pupillo; his nephew, John Hicks; his cousin, Terry Langohr; and his grandchildren: Sawyer (13), Aviva (12), Finn (10), Harper (6), Mittica (5), Lucca (3), and Rocco (3). Paul was preceded in death by his parents, George and Lucille (Hildebrand); his Uncle Harold and Aunt Elenor Gifford; his daughter, Patricia Amptmeyer (Metten); his son, Paul (Jr.) Metten; his grandson, Miles Braun; his sister Lou Ann Hicks (Metten); and his brother-in-law, Arthur (Sandi) Grass.

Paul graduated from Bishop Noll High School in 1960. He served in the United States Air Force as a military policeman between 1961 and 1964, after which he served in the Air Force Reserve until 1967. He received an honorable discharge. Thereafter, he joined the Lake County, Indiana, Sheriff’s Department, serving as a patrolman and rising through the ranks. He retired in 1998 after attaining the rank of Commander of the Lake County Sheriff's Department. Additionally, he served as the Head of Security at Community Hospital for four years. He served as the President of the Highland Jaycees, the President of the Chris Anton Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 125, and the President of the Indiana Fraternal Order of Police State Lodge, a position in which he served for 12 years.

Paul enjoyed simple pleasures like spending time with his grandchildren, boating, long drives, bingo, political programming, and conversation. He spent much of his early retirement in Wolcottville, Indiana, “living the lake life.” He then returned to Lake County to spend time with his grandchildren.
