Richard (Jerry) Gerald Leyba, age 86, passed away on March 1, 2026. He was born on August 2, 1939, and most recently resided in Mesa, Arizona. Prior to that, he lived in Venice, Florida, and for many years in Highland, Indiana.
Jerry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Janice (Matasovsky) Leyba; his daughter, Kimberly (Leyba) Smith; his parents, Richard and Helen Leyba; and his brother, David Leyba. He is additionally preceded in death by his friend, Marita (Wells) Erickson.
Jerry is survived by his daughters, Kelly (James) Tomaszewski and Nicole (Scott) Svoboda; his sister, Doreen (Leyba) Brown; his grandchildren, Paige (Dylan) Gerig, Alexandra Tomaszewski, Grace Tomaszewski, Sara Svoboda, Lauren Svoboda, Evan Svoboda, and Ethan Svoboda; and his great‑grandson, Drew Gerig.
Jerry was a proud United States Marine, and his service to his country remained a source of deep pride throughout his life. He was also a devoted Chicago Bears fan, cheering for his team through every season.
Visitation and funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Our Lady of Grace Church, 3025 Highway Ave., Highland, Indiana. Visitation will take place from 10:00–10:30 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Burial will immediately follow at Concordia Cemetery, 6551 Calumet Ave., Hammond, Indiana.
Jerry will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who knew him.
