Robert "Horsey" Planer Obituary

Robert William Planer Jr., affectionately known as “Horsey,” 78, passed away on Thursday, June 25, surrounded by his loving family and friends after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Darlene; his grandson, Matthew (who wore the prince pass as the first grandchild); Sisters, Charmaine and Nikki and Brothers, Sam and Johnny.

He is lovingly survived by his children: Robert (Rob) (Lucy), Doreen, and Tanya (Brad); his cherished grandchildren: Joseph (Jessica), Dorian, Noah, Katelyn, Meagan, Zac (Ariel), Taylor, and Kinsley; and his beloved great-grandchildren: Caleb, Halilah, Eli, Jonah, Camila, Sofia, Julius, Catalina, Alberto, and Myrcella; and his sisters Carol and Pinkie and brothers Mike, Carl, Butch and Jeff.

Born and raised in Hammond, Indiana, he bravely served in the Army from 75-76 then spent most of his life as a truck driver working for Bulkmatic and later retiring from Yellow Freight.

He was an incredibly proud Papa, and nothing brought him greater joy than spoiling his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and watching them grow. He played a major role in Katelyn’s twin girls life who absolutely adored and will miss him terribly.

Horsey loved shooting pool, spending time with family and friends at his favorite local drinking establishments and making lifelong memories and friends camping at Broken Arrow Campground.

In 2001 his family grew when he discovered he had 8 other brothers and sisters that he welcomed from day one.

Horsey also had a remarkable gift with animals and we liked to call him “the animal whisperer.” Whether it was a family pet or a stray in need, animals naturally trusted him and he spoiled them rotten. No joke, the squirrels and birds would all but knock on his front door looking for peanuts.

Though our hearts are heavy, we find comfort in knowing that Horsey’s love and legacy will continue to live on through his family and the countless lives he touched.

A Celebration of Life, with military honors, will be held on Saturday, July 11, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Jubilee Church in Hobart, Indiana.

Family and friends are invited to gather to honor Horsey’s life, share memories, and celebrate the love and joy he brought to so many.
