Ronald W. Smolen, who grew up in East Chicago, Indiana and was long time resident of Munster, Indiana, peacefully passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
He is survived by his son’s Craig (Jennifer) Smolen and Jeremy Smolen; grandchildren Tyler, Samantha, Catie Anna, Ivy and Emmett; siblings Christopher (Tammy) Smolen, Claudia (George) Matusik, Cathleen (Robert) Micco, James (Paula) Sonntag, Katherine Lorenz, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by wife Delrae (nee Sonntag); mother, Florence Rokosz (nee Esmond); father, Joseph (Carol) Smolen, brother Jonathan Smolen, mother-in-law Luella Sonntag, and sister-in-law Beverly Lorenz.
Ronald was born on August 23, 1948, in East Chicago, Indiana. He was a graduate of Bishop Noll Catholic High School. He and Delrae were married on November 10, 1973. He retired from Inland Steel where he held multiple positions and then later retired from Sears Hardware.
Ron was a proud Boy Scout and later became a volunteer Boy Scout Troop Leader.
Ron was an active member of St. Paul’s Ev. Lutheran Church, Munster, Indiana.
Throughout his life he was a dedicated husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.
The Love he had with Delrae would later be shared with his children and grandchildren.
The gift of laughter would be given to all who met him
Visitation will be Wednesday, December 3, 2025 at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Rd (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN, 46322 from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm with a Funeral Service at 5:30 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations preferred to Hospice of the Calumet Area.
