Shirley "Jean" Banta (nee Darling), 91, died peacefully at her home on November 6, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. One of the great beauties of our time, Jean grew up in Hammond, IN, where she met her husband of 73 years, William Banta. Her passion for living, inner joy, and love of God were apparent to all. Jean was always at the center of her beloved family. She enjoyed her time as an interior decorator for Montgomery Ward, but her real passion was sailing, where she and her husband made many life long friends. Described as classy and elegant, Jean loved sunrises, birds, flowers, and the way the light played through the trees. She was an independent spirit, generous with her love and gifts, and adored by her family and friends.
She is survived by: husband William Banta, son Thomas (Lois) Banta, daughter Nancy (Rob) Boyles, grandchildren Colin Banta, Allison (Jake) Alexander, Elise (Chris) Phillips, and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by: parents Edith and Ernest Darling, and siblings Ray Darling, Betty Rodda, and Nori Bolt. Due to the pandemic, a private family service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Hospice of the Calumet Area.
