Shirley Ann Hewlett, nee Miller, passed away on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
She is survived by her son, Stephen Myers, and stepchildren Douglas (Ashley) Hewlett, Michael (Veronica) Hewlett, Denise (Michael) Gibson, and Margaret (Jeffrey) Halton; grandchildren, Rick (Lisa) Runge, Mike (Carrie) Hall, Rachel (Chad) Kueterman, April (Matthew) Fritz, Becca (Jason) Phipps, Kaley Gibson, Daniel Hewlett, Samantha Myers, Heather Myers, Hannah (Meikelle) Barton, and AJ Myers; many great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; sister, Janice (Darrell) Hurst; nephews, Darren (Amber) Hurst and Devin Hurst; niece, Delaina (Justin) Snelling; several great-nieces and nephews; dearest friends, Carolyn Borchardt and Ann Grant; and feline companions Lovey, Bodie, Hazel, and Fiona.
Preceded in death by her parents, Jake and Myrtle Miller (nee Sutton), loving husband Clyde Hewlett, and stepson Paul Hewlett.
Shirley was born March 22, 1944 in Salem, Indiana. She was a 1962 graduate of Campbellsburg High School and went on to obtain a Bachelor's degree from Indiana State University in Terre Haute and a Master's degree at Purdue Calumet. She taught journalism, photography, yearbook, and newspaper at Hammond Tech for 11 years and then at Lake Central High School for 28 years until she retired. Shirley remained a member of Campbellsburg Christian Church until her death.
Shirley married Clyde Hewlett in 1978 and enjoyed 41 years together, making their home in Munster, Indiana. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, sewing, crocheting, and crafting. Shirley loved reading and hosting family and friends, and was an excellent writer. She was the current secretary, editor, newsletter writer, and webmaster for the Lake County Retired Teacher's Association, where she was also a past president and vice president. Shirley was a past president of Sigma chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, as well as past state secretary and webmaster of the Alpha Epsilon (Indiana) State of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She was an active member of the Indiana Retired Teacher's Association. She belonged to a craft club with her beloved friends.
Shirley was a loving daughter, sister, wife, mother, stepmother, teacher, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend. She had a dynamic personality and will be missed by those who loved her.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Friday, December 5, 2025 from 3-7pm followed by a Memorial Service at 7pm with Pastor Rebecca Sundquist officiating at Hillside Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 8941 Kleinman Road (one block south of Ridge Rd) Highland, IN.
