Vernon Carlson Obituary

Vernon E. Carlson, age 86, of Crown Point, IN, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020.  He is survived by his beloved wife, Janice Carlson; children, Ken (Kelly) Carlson, Sharon (Tim) Mannion, Dave (Lynn) Carlson, Nancy (Dean) Carlson, and Don (Michelle) Carlson; grandchildren, Kim (Mike) Castagnino, Erik (Brittany) Carlson, Liz Carlson, Michael (Elizabeth) Mannion, Julie (Chris) Hall, Steven Carlson, Tim Carlson, Jeff (Kimberly) Carlson, Karalynn, Drew, and Amy Carlson, Kristen (Caleb) Andrews, Rachel (Noah) Brown, Aaron, Abby, Josh, and Sophie Carlson; and 10 great-grandchildren.  Preceding him in death was his parents, Edwin & Ruth Carlson, and grandson Derek Carlson.

Vern was born in Chicago, Illinois on November 17, 1933.  After high school and completing basic training in the Army, he went to Northwestern University in Chicago where he graduated as a civil engineer.  On October 17, 1959 Vern married his sweetheart Jan Conner to enjoy the next 60+ years together raising their five children.  He retired from Inland Steel Company after 35 years of service.  Following retirement, he and Jan enjoyed traveling the country, fishing at Boulder Lake, waiting for the Cubs to win the World Series, and helping his children with numerous home projects all while thoroughly enjoying time spent with their children and grandchildren and church family and friends.  Vern was a born-again believer in Jesus Christ whom he served faithfully most of his life with the last 35 years enjoying fellowship and service at Bethel Church in Crown Point.  His love for his wife and family, his example of decency and good character, his devotion to his Lord and Savior, along with his words of encouragement and wisdom will be sorely missed.  Till we meet again…..!!

A private family graveside service will be conducted at the Calumet Park Cemetery.  Pastor Gary Butler will officiate the internment.  A follow-up memorial service will be conducted at a future date when Covid-19 restrictions have eased and people are again free to travel and gather.

In lieu of flowers, words of encouragement (and hugs) can be sent to Jan while contributions can be made to Bethel Church.
